Fundamental Forces of Nature (CERN)

After viewing the Fundamental Forces of Nature (CERN) Lesson Video, students will explore the effects of electromagnetism—one of the fundamental forces of nature. This lab differs from a traditional STEM lab in that students are asked to engage in deep reflection about the experimental process and the value of science with no practical application.

SUBJECTS Physics
GRADES 8–12
TIME REQUIRED Two to three class periods (100–150 minutes)

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Students will perform three short activities demonstrating electromagnetic force, recording their findings in sketches and observational statements.
  • Students will use critical thinking and communications skills to reflect upon and discuss the experimental process and the value of science with no practical application.

MATERIALS

Activity 1: Magnetic Field Lines

  • Clear plastic sheet protector
  • Iron filings
  • Sheet of plain white paper
  • Tape
  • 2 bar magnets
  • Directional compass

Activity 2: Static Electricity

  • Latex balloon
  • Tissue paper (cut into a few small pieces)

Activity 3: Electromagnetic Induction

  • PVC pipe (1-1.5” diameter, 1 foot length)
  • Insulated copper wire
  • Galvanometer
  • Pencil
  • Bar magnet

Lesson Implementation Materials

Because these Lessons follow a unique format, it is important to review the TEACHER GUIDE before implementing the activity.

  1. Begin the lesson by viewing the 16-min Fundamental Forces of Nature (CERN) LESSON VIDEO above from the SEARCHING series as a class. Note: If your class has recently implemented a SEARCHING Lesson, you can skip the video introduction and begin the video at minute 03:45.
  2. Download and print the LESSON INTRODUCTION. Students (and teachers) should read this before starting the activity.
  3. Download and print the STUDENT WORKSHEETS.  (PDF)  (DOC)
